1.  Shop & Dine on Thames Street

The historic Thames Street stretches along the Newport Harbor. This part of town offers plenty of great places to shop, wine, and dine.

This 1.5-mile street is the beating heart of the city, boasting everything from art galleries and boutique shops to some of the best bars and restaurants in town.

2.  Stroll Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk is a 3.5-mile National Recreation Trail in a National Historic District – and is a must-do when visiting Newport in the summer.

The Cliff Walk begins at the western end of Easton’s Beach and ends at the east end of Bailey’s Beach on Bellevue Ave. It boasts all kinds of historic landmarks along the way, as well as some of the most breathtaking vistas and photo ops along the Atlantic Ocean, making it a top spot for history buffs and nature enthusiasts alike.

3.  Tour a Gilded Age Mansion

The city’s 11 iconic mansions provide a glimpse into the glitz and glamor of the Gilded Age. Built by some of the country’s most wealthy families between 1870 and 1910, these mansions were summer “cottages” for vacations and hosting elite parties.

Tour the homes via a self-guided tour or sign up for a guided one and learn about the families’ extravagant lifestyles and parties. 

4. Visit Brenton Point State Park

A day trip to 89-acre Brenton Point State Park is another must-do activity when visiting Newport, RI in the summer. This gorgeous park offers tons of outdoor activities perfect for the whole family. It’s a great place for hiking, birdwatching, picnicking, and fishing. You’ll enjoy unrivaled views over Narragansett Bay, as well as magical sunsets.

5. Taste Wine & Beer at Newport Vineyards

 Just four miles from the heart of town, Newport Vineyards is a 100-acre farm, offering 50 acres of vineyards that produce a variety of award-winning wines. 

Beer more your thing? No problem! The property is also home to Taproot Brewing Co., which has been fermenting small batch beers for over 25 years. And if you love food, you’ll want to dine at this farm-to-table restaurant too.
